Here are a few frequently asked questions that we typically receive regarding the UTD Esports Team. Have another question that isn’t listed below? Feel free to let us know in the #ask-a-question channel on our Discord!
Can I or anyone use the Esports Room?
No. The Esports Room (located on the 2nd floor of the Student Union) can only be used by the team’s athletes.
What is Discord?
Discord is a modern and free text/voice communications app we use to keep our fans, students and parents up to date with our team! Here’s a parents 101 guide on using discord: https://utdesports.com/en-us/news/a-parents-guide-to-discord/
Will you guys add/support more games or teams?
As of right now, we currently have two teams for League of Legends and Overwatch, an “A” team and a “B” team, as well as a Super Smash Ultimate Team and Rocket League Team. We are definitely looking to add more teams and games for our department in the future semesters to come. We will look into adding more games primarily based off student popularity and if the Athletics Department would consider adding it to the Esports Team.
How can I support the current teams?
You can help support the UTD Esports Teams by coming out to our competitions/tournaments/events, watching our livestreams at https://www.twitch.tv/utdesports, https://instagram.com/utdesports, https://twitter.com/utdesports, https://tiktok.com/@utdesports and even playing video games with other students in our Discord and sharing the link with your friends! We encourage all students to help support our teams that way we can expand quicker at UT Dallas.
I want to help the team with services, what can I do?
DEPARTMENT: If you’re a part of a UT Dallas Department, please email esports@utdallas.edu.
CLUB: If you’re a gaming club and want to partner for events, please message Esports Staff via our Discord Server or email esports@utdallas.edu with your @utdallas.edu email.
INDIVIDUAL LOOKING TO WORK: While we may not have an active listing for a student staff job, you can direct message Esports Staff via our Discord Server if you are interested in helping the program with specific services (ie. writing, graphics designing, videography, etc).
Are you guys adding a Fortnite Team?
Fortnite is definitely a prime-popular game right now with its recent boom in the battle-royale genre, however there sadly is not enough “esports/competitive” friendly tools in the game in order for us to add a team for it at this time. We’ll be patiently waiting for Epic Games (game developer company of Fortnite) to add in more tournament modes until we look further into adding this game.
Why don’t you guys add Call of Duty/CSGO/GameName?
We are very selective on what games we bring onto our university athletic team. It requires a lot of resources, time, and money to operate our teams so we have a very selective process on determining which games to add. TLDR; Games need to be hot in the competitive scene for us to even consider it, and additionally, there needs to be the skill level at UT Dallas to even form a team. If you don’t see a game that you play, START ONE! Take a look at the ones in #utd-gaming-clubs.
Is there an official non-competitive team?
There are no official UTD Esports Teams that are not competitive other than our A and B Team, such as listed above. There are however numerous clubs and activities on campus, such as the LoLUTD and SGDA club. You can join their discords below.
Can I tryout for the Smash Ultimate Team?
There are no open tryouts for our Smash Ultimate Team at this time. If you are interested in joining the team, we suggest you make an appearance at our next smash ultimate tournament event on campus (will be announced in #announcements whenever they’re finalized) to show off your competitive skillset. If you are highly experienced and have a tournament win background, you can email us at esports@utdallas.edu with your tournament winnings & info about yourself.
